Infertility Workup

Infertility Workup

If you and your partner have been trying to conceive without success, an infertility workup is the next step toward understanding the causes of infertility. At Khurana Hospital and IVF Centre, we offer a comprehensive infertility workup designed to assess both male and female fertility, identify any underlying issues, and create a personalized treatment plan to enhance your chances of conception.

What is an Infertility Workup?

An infertility workup is a series of tests and assessments aimed at diagnosing the underlying causes of infertility in both men and women. The goal of the workup is to pinpoint any issues that may be affecting your ability to conceive, whether they involve hormonal imbalances, ovulation issues, sperm quality, or structural problems. This detailed evaluation helps our specialists develop a targeted plan to address your specific fertility needs.

Why is an Infertility Workup Important?

An infertility workup is essential because infertility can result from a variety of factors, and understanding the exact cause is crucial for effective treatment. It is an important step that allows our team to rule out or identify issues that could prevent conception, ensuring that we can recommend the most appropriate fertility treatments or interventions.

Steps Involved in an Infertility Workup
  • Initial Consultation and Medical History:

    • The first step in the infertility workup involves a detailed consultation with one of our experienced fertility specialists. During this consultation, we will review your medical history, lifestyle, and reproductive history. We will also discuss your menstrual cycle (for women) and any past surgeries, treatments, or conditions that may impact fertility.
  • Infertility Testing for Women:

    • Ovulation Testing: To ensure that ovulation is occurring regularly, we may perform tests such as blood tests to measure hormone levels (FSH, LH, Progesterone) and ultrasound imaging to monitor the ovaries.
    • Hormonal Assessment: Blood tests to evaluate the levels of key hormones that regulate fertility, including FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone), LH (Luteinizing Hormone), and AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone). These tests help us assess ovarian reserve and determine if ovulation is occurring normally.
    • Hysterosalpingography (HSG): This test involves using X-rays to check the condition of the fallopian tubes and uterus. It helps identify blockages, infections, or structural problems that could affect fertility.
    • Ultrasound Imaging: Pelvic ultrasound is used to assess the uterus and ovaries, checking for conditions like fibroids, cysts, or endometriosis, which could affect fertility.
    • Laparoscopy: In some cases, a laparoscopic procedure may be recommended to examine the pelvic organs for conditions like endometriosis, adhesions, or other issues that may not be visible on ultrasound or X-rays.
  • Infertility Testing for Men:

    • Semen Analysis: The first and most important test for male infertility is a semen analysis. This test evaluates sperm count, motility (movement), morphology (shape), and overall sperm quality.
    • Hormonal Assessment: Blood tests to measure testosterone, FSH, and LH levels to evaluate the function of the testicles and overall male reproductive health.
    • Genetic Testing: In some cases, we may recommend genetic testing to check for chromosomal abnormalities or genetic conditions that could impact sperm production or the ability to conceive.
    • Scrotal Ultrasound: This test is used to check for issues like varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum), which can affect sperm production and quality.
  • Additional Tests (If Required):

    • Thyroid Function Test: Thyroid issues can significantly impact fertility. We may recommend thyroid function tests to ensure your thyroid is functioning properly.
    • Prolactin Levels: Elevated prolactin levels can disrupt the menstrual cycle in women and affect sperm production in men. We may test for prolactin levels to rule out this cause.
